And no matter how much we try to set things right or how much we plead ourselves innocent, there is nothing which can be done other than hoping that maybe one day, things will go back to how they were.

Reminders of Him is a book about how we have no control over a few things. No matter how much we try to explain to people we weren’t at fault, still we plead guilty. This book lays stress upon the fact that there are always two sides of a story and we shouldn’t come to any conclusions by hearing both sides. Moreover it conveys how people are different and how they grieve in their own ways.

Kenna had trouble growing up with her mother. But when she meets Scotty, all those troubles seem nothing in front of the love they both had for each other. Kenna and Scotty have a perfect life. Though Scotty’s parents have misunderstood Kenna but still they both are happy and content with each other. It feels like life couldn’t be any better.

Until one day, after returning from a party, they met with an accident and Scotty died. With no one as a witness all the blame is on Kenna for Scotty’s death.

THEMES

Just like Colleen Hoover’s other books, this book also has some of the most deep and thought provoking themes.

● Redemption– there are times when we do something bad or wrong or we commit a mistake willingly or even willingly. But what matters is that we sense that whatever we did was wrong and try not to do that thing again.

● Forgiveness– we can either hold onto grudges or we can forgive others for what they did. Holding onto grudges just provokes bad thoughts while forgiving provides a sense of relief.

● Grief– we all are different and so are our ways of dealing with things. The book shows how we deal with grief differently too.

● Indecision– there are instances when we end up in situations we have no control over. And we end up either making bad decisions or we don’t take any decisions at all.

● Judgment– we as human beings are prone to judge people without even knowing the whole story. There are always two sides of every story and we shouldn’t come to any conclusions before accounting them.

● Self- forgiveness– this is a major theme. We are most of the time hard on ourselves. We tend to punish ourselves and remind ourselves time and again that we did something wrong. But in order to live a happy life, self-forgiveness is really important just like in the novel Kenna blames herself for certain things.

CHARACTERS

● Kenna– a perfect example of how even though growing up in a non-loving family, you still can love and take care of people around you. Her mother never fulfilled her responsibilities but Kenna did what else she could to be a good mother to Diem

● Scotty– someone who makes us believe that even though we had a bad past but still we have jope for a better future.

● Ledger Ward– a best friend everyone should have. His way of dealing with things maturely is something we all should learn. The way he didn’t forced any judgments and tried to know the whole story was a quality we all should have.

BEST LINES

● Grudges are heavy, but for the people hurting the most, I suppose forgiveness is even heavier.

● Now that I’ve forgiven myself, the reminders of him only make me smile.

● We’re all just a bunch of sad people doing what we have to do to make it until tomorrow.

● Reading is a hobby, but for some of us, it’s an escape from the difficulties we face. To all of you who escape into books, I want to thank you for escaping into this one.

CONCLUSION

A book worth re-reading again and again and a book which would definitely make you teary. The whole way how the love of a mother is portrayed is absolutely phenomenal. The letters written to Scotty were just way too emotional. And overall the amazing plot and the themes were way too deep and it will definitely leave anyone thinking.
