Introduction

Nora Seed is the protagonist of this book. Nora attempts suicide due to her monotonous life and because she feels that she is unaccomplished and ordinary. The final straw was the death of her cat, “Voltaire,” and the strained relationship with her brother. She ends up at a place called “The Midnight Library,” which is a grey area between life and death. The author Matt Haig addresses several themes, like the beauty of life, the power of perception, and small acts of kindness in one’s life. The author explores the chance of infinite possibilities in life through the life of the protagonist, Nora Seed.

About the book

The Midnight Library is an easy read with short chapters and an interesting plotline. The author tries to shed some light on the impact of depression and how it can cloud one’s perception of life. He used the story of Nora Seed and her visit to the midnight library to show the value of life and the lessons one can learn from the darkest corners of depression. The underlying theme of the book is that regrets don’t make us move ahead in life. It is important to remember that we cannot change our past but can very well alter our present and future.

Plot of the book

The protagonist, Nora Seed, is playing chess in the Hazeldene school library with the school librarian, Mrs. Elm. Nora discusses with Mrs. Elm about her desire to be a professional swimmer but had to quit because of the pressure from her father. As Mrs. Elm suggests to Nora that she become a glaciologist, Nora is informed about the death of her father. The story moves 19 years ahead to the present, where Nora works in a music shop called “String Theory,” teaches music to a boy named Leo, and has broken up with her fiancé Dan. Nora had lost her cat, and though her brother was in town, he refused to visit her. Depressed, Nora attempts to commit suicide by consuming pills and wine. She ends up in a place called the midnight library and meets someone who resembles Mrs. Elm. The place is filled with rows of books, and Nora is persuaded by Mrs. Elm to try out different lives that might make her happy. To please Mrs. Elm, Nora agrees to try out the different lives. In one, she is part of a famous music band with her brother; in another, she has a child with Dan; or she has gone to Australia to be with her best friend Izzy. In one life, she studies glaciology and is hunted by a polar bear as she runs for her life. Each life gives her a new perspective on life and also reveals a side of herself that she wasn’t aware of. Which life does Nora finally choose? Will life give her a second chance?
